Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures’ baseball drama 42 starring Harrison Ford hit an eye-catching number one home run during an otherwise sluggish box office session in North America.

The drama stars Chadwick Boseman as iconic sportsman Jackie Robinson and Ford as his career ally, Brooklyn Dodgers team executive Branch Rickey. Brian Helgeland directed.

Scary Movie 5 ranks second and opened on $14.6m, a drastically inferior result to its predecessor’s $40.2m debut in 2006 that does not bode well for the Dimension Films franchise.

Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation crossed $100 in its third session and the erstwhile champion Evil Dead reached an excellent $41.4m by the end of its second weekend.

Meanwhile The Place Beyond The Pines climbed to number 10 after expanding to 514 theatres in its third weekend through Focus Features and stands at $5.5m.

Next weekend’s wide releases include Universal’s sci-fi adventure Oblivion starring Tom Cruise and Olivia Wilde from Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski.
