UPDATED JANUARY 26: Clint Eastwood’s box office phenomenon crossed the $200m threshold in its second wide weekend while Lionsgate’s Mortdecai and Disney’s Strange Magic both flopped.

American Sniper starring Bradley Cooper as the late Navy SEAL sharpshooter Chris Kyle stayed top following a 28% decline to add a confirmed $64.6m for $200.4m after five sessions.

A further $5.8m from 333 Imax screens pushed the tally to $18.8m to ensure the film will end the month as the biggest ever January Imax release.

Mortdecai starring Johnny Depp and Gwyneth Paltrow arrived in ninth place via Lionsgate on a disappointing $4.2m from 2,648 venues.

Universal’s Jennifer Lopez thriller The Boy Next Door opened in second place on $14.9m from 2,602 while Disney animation Strange Magic debuted at number seven on a disappointing $5.5m from 3,020.

Jennifer Aniston drama Cake, which earned the actress a Golden Globe nomination and glowing reviews, arrived via Cinelou Films on a lacklustre $916,179 from 482 sites.

The Jude Law submarine thriller Black Sea opened via Focus on $37,675 from five venues.

Overall box office for the top 12 dropped 23.2% against last weekend and climbed 71% against the comparable session in 2014.

This week’s wide releases are Paramount’s sci-fi Project Almanac; thriller The Loft starring Karl Urban and James Marsden through Open Road; and Relativity’s drama Black Or White starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer.
