A muscular launch for Paramount’s comedy generated the second biggest launch in the Jackass family as Fox’s The Counselor flopped and Oscar contender 12 Years A Slave broke into the top ten in its second session.

Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa took an estimated $32m and stars Johnny Knoxville as a mischievous geriatric in the scripted reality hybrid reminiscent of the Borat model.

Warner Bros’ Gravity lost its number one berth for the first time in four weekends, although a further $20.3m boosted the running total to $199.8m and the worldwide haul to $364.2m.

Meanwhile Fox’s The Counselor, a poorly reviewed ensemble from Ridley Scott about a botched drug deal, arrived at number four on $8m.

Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt and Penelope Cruz star and Cormac McCarthy makes his debut as an original screenwriter.

Sony’s Captain Phillips at number three has grossed $70.1m after three sessions, while stablemate Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 at number five crossed $100m in its fifth weekend to reach $100.6m.

Fox Searchlight expanded 12 Years A Slave from 19 to 123 theatres in its second weekend and the drama shot up eight places to number eight on $2.2m for $3.4m.

Overall box office climbed 1.7% against last weekend and gained 15% on the same session last year.

IFC opened this year’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Blue Is The Warmest Color on $101,000 from four for a strong $25,000 per-site average.

Costa-Gavras’ financial thriller Capital arrived through Cohen Media Group on $22,400 from two sites and Noujaim Films opened documentary The Square on $15,700 from a single site.

Another documentary, Spinning Plates, opened through The Film Arcade on $20,500 from three venues.

This week’s wide releases are the young adult sci-fi adaptation Ender’s Game starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford and Hailee Steinfeld through Lionsgate-Summit; CBS Films’ comedy Last Vegas with Michael Douglas, Robert DeNiro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline; and Relativity’s animation Free Birds.
