As expected Catching Fire maintained control of the North American charts over the Thanksgiving holiday period despite a superb first wide weekend from Disney’s animation Frozen.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire boosted its running total by $74.5m from 4,163 theatres to reach $296.5m after the second weekend.

The running total including $276.4m from international stands at $572.8m. The five-day Thanksgiving holiday session in North America generated a record holiday haul for IMAX on $8.6m from 346 screens. The North American running total stands at $23m and the worldwide score is $32m.

Overall box office for the top 12 dropped 10.6% against last weekend when the young adult sequel debuted. However the aggregate score climbed 84% on the same session in 2012 when Lionsgate-Summit’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 entered its third weekend at number one.

Frozen expanded last Wednesday (November 27) through Buena Vista from a single theatre to 3,742 and took $15.2m, brining in a further $66.7m over the three-day weekend to leap 20 places to number two on $93.4m.

The Jason Statham thriller Homefront debuted at number five through Open Road Films on a mediocre $6.9m from 2,570 venues. Fox Searchlight’s musical Black Nativity opened at number eight on $3.9m, rising to $5m over the five-day holiday weekend.

It was a good session for smart expansions as Philomena swelled from four theatres to 835 and vaulted 19 places to number nine on $3.8m for $4.8m in its second weekend through TWC.

Fox 2000’s WWII drama The Book Thief starring Sophie Nélisse, Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson climbed nine slots to number seven after expanding from 70 sites to 1,234 and grossing $4.9m for $7.9m after four.

Last Vegas has amassed $58.7m after five sessions through CBS Films. FilmDistrict opened Spike Lee’s Oldboy on $850,000 from 583 venues. Josh Brolin stars in the remake of Park Chan-wook’s South Korean revenge classic and Good Universe licensed international rights.

TWC opened its awards hopeful Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom and it did well, earning $100,300 from four sites for a $25,075 average.
