Box office climbed 34% over the previous session as Sony’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 stormed to the top on an estimated $35m.

Last weekend’s champion, Alcon’s crime thriller Prisoners starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal, fell to number two on $11.3m for $38.9m through Warner Bros.

In its second weekend the F1 drama Rush starring Daniel Brühl and Chris Hemsworth expanded through Universal from five to 2,297 theatres and climbed 35 places to number three on $10.3m for $10.6m.

The recent world premiere is financed in an even split by Cross Creek Pictures and international sales agent Exclusive Media.

Fox Searchlight opened its comedy Baggage Claim at number four on $9.3m while Relativity’s Sundance pick-up Don Jon, the feature directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt financed by international sales agent Voltage Pictures, arrived at number five on $9m.

Insidious: Chapter 2 fell four places to number six in its third weekend through FilmDistrict and added $6.7m for $69.5m.

Pantelion’s Instructions Not Included ranks eighth in its fifth weekend and has overtaken Pan’s Labyrinth to become the biggest Spanish-language release in the US (see separate story) on $38.6m.

Bob Berney is back in distribution and his fledgling Picturehouse released the concert film-narrative hybrid Metallica Through The Never at number 13 on 305 exclusive IMAX screens, grossing $1.7m for a $5,482 average.

The film expands into 650 screens on October 4. This was a record concert film debut on IMAX.

RADiUS-TWC opened the documentary Inequality For All on five screens for $140,000.

Next weekend’s wide releases are Warner Bros’ space thriller Gravity from Alfonso Cuaron starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as well as Fox’s thriller Runner Runner with Justin Timberlake, Ben Affleck and Gemma Arteron and
