Baltasar Kormakur’s remake of the 2008 Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam starring Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale was the clear number one, earning an estimated $24.1m.

Disney’s 3D re-release of its time-honoured classic Beauty And The Beast opened in second place on $18.5m, followed in fourth place on $11.3m by Warner Bros’ comedy musical Joyful Noise boasting the talents of Dolly Parton and Queen Latifah.

Paramount’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in third place stands at $186.7m after five weekends and has crossed $500m worldwide.

Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes sequel in fifth stands at $170m after five and $390m worldwide, while Sony’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo in seventh has grossed $88m after four and more than $135m worldwide.

The independent highlight of the weekend was TWC’s The Iron Lady, which expanded from five to 802 venues in its third weekend and climbed 16 places to number 10 on $5.4m for an early $5.9m.

Next weekend’s wide releases include Sony/Screen Gems action fantasy Underworld Awakening with returning franchise star Kate Beckinsale; Relativity’s action thriller Haywire from Steven Soderbergh starring newcomer Gina Carano; and Fox’s action adventure Red Tails.
