Audience demand kept Warner Bros’ all-categories Oscar contender at the top of the North American charts as an estimated $44.3m in the second session boosted the running total to $123.4m.

The space adventure scored IMAX’s biggest second weekend in history in North America as a little over $9m from 278 holdover IMAX runs raised the running total to approximately $26.5m by the end of Sunday. The global tally stands at $33.3m.

Sony’s awards contender Captain Phillips, another survival story in an awards season chock-full of them, weighed anchor at number two on $26m.

Tom Hanks stars in Paul Greengrass’ adaptation of the real-life tale of the Somali hijacking of a US merchant vessel. Captain Phillips generated $450,000 from 45 IMAX sites.

Sony’s Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 fell two places to number four to reach $78m after three weekends but there was a poor launch for the Danny Trejo action sequel Machete Kills through Open Road at number four on $3.8m.

Box office for the top 12 fell around 6% against last weekend and roughly 11% against the comparable session in 2012.

Alcon’s highly regarded Prisoners ranks sixth on $53.6m after four weekends through Warner Bros. Insidious: Chapter 2 stands at $78.4m in seventh place after five sessions through FilmDistrict. One place behind it sits the acclaimed Rush on $22.2m after four through Universal.

Pantelion’s Pulling Strings ranks 12th in its second weekend on $4.1m while stablemate Instructions Not Included ranks 14th on $42.7m after seven weekends.

Relativity Media opened Romeo And Juliet at number 18 on $509,000 from 461. Julian Fellowes adapted the screenplay to Shakespeare’s enduring classic tragedy.

Next weekend’s wide releases are Sony/Screen Gems Carrie remake starring Chloe Moretz, Lionsgate-Summit’s thriller Escape Plan starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone and recent Toronto International Film Festival opener The Fifth Estate with Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Brühl.
