New Line-MGM’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies dominated the North American box office, grossing an estimated $56.2m from Friday-Sunday that climbed to $91M over five days.

Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth finale - his sixth in the Lord Of The Rings and Hobbit series - stands at $355.6m worldwide after two weekends and is set for a huge holiday run that should carry it well into the New Year.

The film grossed $20.1m for a record Imax worldwide December weekend, of which $13.6m came from 360 Imax screens in North America over five days.

Fox’s Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb arrived in second place on $17.3m over three days and Columbia Pictures’ Annie finished third on $16.3m over three days.

UTV scored a record Bollywood launch in North America for the comedy fantasy P.K. starring Amir Khan. The film placed tenth and grossed $22.1m in its opening session in India.

Wild climbed four places to number six in the third session through Fox Searchlight after expanding from 116 to 1,061 theatres, grossing $4.2m for $7.2m.

Exodus: Gods And Kings ranks fourth through Fox on $8.1m for $38.9m in the second weekend, while Lionsgate’s Mockingjay - Part 1 in fifth place added $7.8m for $289.2m in the fifth session.

SPC opened Mr. Turner starring Oscar contender Timothy Spall on $109,000 from five venues for a solid $21,800 average, while GKids’ animation hopeful Song Of The Sea arrived in a single site on $18,000.

Overall box office gained 69% on the previous weekend while the combined $128,718,000 box office for the top 12 finished a little over 6% behind the comparable session in 2013, when The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug entered its second weekend.

This week’s wide releases do not include Columbia Pictures’ comedy The Interview after the studio pulled the film following threats from an unknown source responsible for cyber attacks on the studio. The studio has said it will release the film eventually in some form.

Releases include Disney’s Into The Woods, Universal’s Unbroken and Paramount’s The Gambler.
