Holmes 2 faces Underworld, Descendants at box office

Sherlock Holmes 2 has dominated the international arena in recent weekends but will need to muster all its nous to prevail against Underworld and The Descendants.

Warner Bros Pictures International’s sleuth has taken more than $270m and opens this weekend in France.

J. Edgar stands at $22m and gets a push into four majors, opening in Australia, Brazil, Japan and Spain. New Year’s Eve stands at $91m while Journey 2 figures are expected by Sunday.

Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) unleashes Underworld: Awakening in 12 new markets including Australia, Mexico and Spain. The supernatural action release opened last weekend on $13.9m and by Tuesday stood at $15.8m.

SPRI pitches Moneyball into three new markets including Italy and the Oscar nominee stood at $31.2m.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo stands at $70.5m and is bearing down on the $94.5m North American running total. The thriller opens in nine including Brazil and New Zealand.

Jack And Jill on $25.6m arrives in seven including France and Germany. The Adventures Of Tintin has reached $286.3m – of which $193.5m comes from SPRI territories, $74.8m from PPI and the balance from independents.

PPI launches Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol in five territories including China, Italy and Sweden. Another big weekend is expected for the action thriller, which currently stands at $342.9m.

Award contender The Descendants has a big weekend lined up through Fox International last time around and stands at $9.9m with around 28 territories set to welcome it including the UK, Russia, Germany, France, Brazil, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The Darkest Hour has grossed $37.3m, Alvin 3 $171.5m and We Bought A Zoo $18.9m

UPI opens Intruders on an early $4.3m in the UK and The Grey in Russia day-and-date with the North American release. Multiple Oscar nominee Hugo stands at a relatively early $12.8m through PPI.
