Man of Steel eyes $200m mark

Warner Bros’ Superman reboot should deliver a mighty follow-up session this weekend, complemented by significant plays from a marauding horde of zombies and a far cuddlier breed of monster.

Man Of Steel was on course to cross $100m on Thursday [20] and stood at $99m by the end of Wednesday after one week in release through Warner Bros Pictures International.

The Superman reboot arrives in a further 26 markets this weekend including China, Russia, France, Germany, Italy and Spain and few will be surprised if it gets close to the $200m mark by Sunday.

Meanwhile, The Hangover Part III has reached $206.4m with Japan and Mexico to come on Jun 28 and The Great Gatsby stands at $165m.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International has lined up a robust launch for Monsters University in around 35 territories day-and-date with North America.

The latest Pixar tentpole and sequel to 2001’s Monsters, Inc arrives in Germany, Australia, Russia, Mexico, Spain and Brazil, among others.

Paramount Pictures International’s World War Z starring Brad Pitt scored solid opening days in South Korea and Australia on Thursday, grossing $1.5m and $1.1m, respectively.

The zombie action film bursts into approximately 25 territories day-and-date with North America including the UK, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Argentina.

Universal Pictures International’s smash Fast & Furious 6 had reached a franchise-best $417.1m by the end of last weekend and will surge towards the $440m mark. The action film opens in Venezuela.

Despicable Me 2 debuts in Australia several weeks before it is due to open in North America on Jul 5.

Step Up 4 arrives in Germany.

Sony Pictures Releasing International’s sci-fi After Earth has notched up $99.6m and touches down in Japan and Egypt.

Comedy This Is The End opens in New Zealand.

Fox International’s animation Epic has grossed $121.7m, while DreamWorks Animation’s The Croods stands at $397.2m and The Internship has reached an early $5.1m.
