The independent drama starring awards contender Jake Gyllenhaal as a freelance LA crime reporter dominated a weak Halloween weekend session on $11m.

There were two wide-release blow-outs. The 10th anniversary re-release of Saw generated $650,000 through Lionsgate from 2,063 screens, while Clarius Entertainment opened Rowan Joffe’s thriller Before I Go To Sleep starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong at number 14 on $2m from 1,902 sites.

Nightcrawler opened top on an estimated $10.9m through Open Road Films. Last week the distributor signed an international sales alliance with FilmNation, however Sierra/Affinity handles sales on Nightcrawler.

Box office for the top 12 fell 20% against last weekend and plunged 72% against the comparable session in 2013, when Enders’ Game – another film involving Sierra/Affinity – opened top on $27m.

Most of the top 10 stayed the same. Last weekend’s champion Ouija fell to number two on $10.9m for $34.9m, while Fury ranks third through Sony and has amassed $60.4m after three sessions.

Lionsgate’s John Wick stands at $27.6m and ranks sixth through Lionsgate after two sessions.

St. Vincent ranks seventh in its fourth weekend and added $7.8m for $19.5m through The Weinstein Company as the film expanded by 270 theatres to 2,552.

Birdman is going great guns through Fox Searchlight and ranks 12th in its third weekend on $5m. The distributor expanded the theatre-count from 50 to 231 and grossed $2m.

RADiUS opened Horns from Alex Aja starring Daniel Radliffe on $104,000 from 103 venues.

This week’s wide release is Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Big Hero 6.
