The superhero reboot grossed an estimated $65m through Sony Pictures and claimed $140m over the first six days in North America. Buena Vista became the first distributor to cross the $1bn threshold in 2012 in an industry record 188 days.

Marc Webb directed The Amazing Spider-Man, which stars the UK’s Andrew Garfield in the lead and Rhys Ifans as his nemesis Dr Curt Connors aka The Lizard. Emma Stone plays the love interest Gwen Stacy and the key cast includes Denis Leary, Martin Sheen and Sally Field. Irrfan Khan also stars.

Universal’s R-rated comedy Ted fell to number two and stands at $120.2m after two weekends while Pixar’s Brave has grossed $174.5m through Buena Vista after three.

The studio has crossed the $1bn mark 16 times in the last 19 years and has done so for the past seven years. Disney owes this year’s achievement to the extraordinary performance of Marvel Studios’ The Avengers, which stands at $611.1m after ten sessions.

Oliver Stone’s ensemble drug thriller Savages opened in fourth place through Universal on $16.2m while Katy Perry: Part Of Me arrived in eighth through Paramount on $7.2m and $10.3m over four days. Magic Mike stands at $72.8m through Warner Bros after two and ranks fifth.

Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love climbed seven places to number ten through SPC and stands at $5.6m.

Next weekend’s wide release is Fox’s Ice Age: Continental Drift from Blue Sky Studios.
