Universal’s annus mirabilis continued apace as low budget horror The Purge opened top on $36.4m and Fast & Furious 6 ensured a one-two finish as it crossed $200m in its third weekend.

Genre specialist Jason Blum produced The Purge, which stars Ethan Hawke as the head of a household that faces intruders during a traditional night when the government suspends law enforcement.

James DeMonaco directed and Blum’s fellow producers on the project included Michael Bay.

Paramount’s Star Trek Into Darkness breached the $200m barrier in its fourth weekend and ranks sixth on $200.1m.

Fast & Furious 6 stands at $202.9m.

Fox did not enjoy a good weekend as Shawn Levy’s Owen Wilson-Vince Vaughn comedy The Internship slumped to an $18.1m number four launch.

Lionsgate-Summit’s magic thriller Now You See Me in third place stands at $61.4m after two weekends while Sony’s Will Smith-Jaden Smith sci-fi After Earth ranks seventh on $46.6m after the same amount of time.

The Great Gatsby in 10th place stands at $136.2m after five weekends and Mud, Jeff Nichols’ southern drama starring Matthew McConaughey, ranks 11th on a terrific $18.6m after seven sessions through Roadside Attractions.

In limited release, busy Roadside Attractions opened Joss Whedon’s Toronto 2012 premiere Much Ado About Nothing on $183,000 from five venues for an excellent $36,600 average.

Next weekend’s wide releases are: Warner Bros’ Superman reboot Man Of Steel starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan; and Sony comedy This Is The End boasting an ensemble that includes Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride, Michael Cera and Emma Watson.
