Universal Pictures International (UPI) top brass announced that as of Monday the company had reached $1.8bn - its biggest year at the box office.

Propelling the banner year-to-date have been Fast & Furious 6 on $544.4m, Despicable Me 2 on $410m and Les Misérables on $293m.

UPI’s previous record was set in 2012 when the studio grossed $1.794bn.

Other notable performers for 2013 so far have been Oblivion on $197.1m and Mama on $75.9m.

Fast & Furious 6 and Despicable Me rank as the number two and three films at the box office so far in 2013 behind Iron Man 3.

UPI has ruled the international box office six times this year. Fast & Furious 6 opened at number one in 65 territories and scored the studio’s biggest launch in 41 of those markets. The action film ranks as Universal’s second biggest release of all time behind Jurassic Park.

Despicable Me 2 is the highest grossing animated film of the year so far and debuted at number one in 41 territories, delivering all-time grosses for the studio in 15.

Les Misérables is the second highest grossing musical internationally and worldwide behind Universal’s Mamma Mia! 

Oblivion launched at number one in 49 territories and was Tom Cruise’s biggest opening of all-time in Russia and Indonesia.

Mama, generated by Universal Pictures International Production group, ran riot in Latin territories and held top spot in Spain for three consecutive weeks.

UPI’s local Argentinian production Foosball has grossed $11.2m and remained at number one for three weeks.

There are still 14 films to release during the remainder of the year including three wide releases.
