The 35th Cambridge Film Festival (Sept 3-13) has revealed its full line-up for this year, including titles from over 30 different countries.

Star*Men, a documentary from debut director Alison E. Rose will open the festival. The film follows four UK astronomers, Donald Lynden-Bell FRS and Roger Griffin of the University of Cambridge, and Wal Sargent FRS and Neville Woolf of Manchester University, on a road trip to the United States.

The festival’s closing night gala will be the UK premiere of Palio, Cosima Spender’s documentary about the world’s oldest horse race, which debuted at Tribeca in April before playing at Karlovy Vary in July.

The main programme will feature the UK premiere of Robert Redford’s political thriller The Company You Keep, which he directrs and stars in. The festival will also screen the Redford-starring A Walk In The Woods, from director Ken Kawpis.

Also having its UK premiere is the directorial debut of Bridesmaids star Maya Forbes, Infinitely Polar Bear, which stars Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana.

The festival will host the world premiere of Dance Iranian Style, Iranian filmmaker Farshad Aria’s feature debut that takes blends documentary and drama to tell the story of a young Iranian girl living on the streets of Amsterdam after being denied refuge by Dutch immigration.

Other films screening in the main programme include Nanni Moretti’s Palme d’Or nominated Mia Madre, Tom Hardy-starring Kray twins biopic Legend, Woody Allen’s latest Irrational Man, and 99 Homes, which stars Andrea Garfield, Michael Shannon and Laura Dern.

Documentaries featured at the festival include Christian Braad Thomsen’s portrait of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Fassbinder: To Love Without Demands, Mark Cousins’ latest Atomic: Living in Dread and Promise, and the UK premiere of director Peter Webber’s 10 Billion, which searches for a solution to the world hunger crisis.

Musician and keen astronomer Brian May will attend the festival this year with his film One Night In Hell, an animated short directed by James Hall and Jason Jameson.

The screening will take place as part of a special 3D evening that will also feature the UK premiere of 3D Rarities, an archival collection of 3D film footage dating back as early as the 1920s, which was previously shown at MOMA in New York.

Another event taking place will be a screening of BBC Arena At 40: Night And Day – The Arena Time Machine, a celebration of the television programme that won nine BAFTA Awards and was voted one of the top 50 most influential programmes of all time in Broadcast Magazine.

Directed by Anthony Wally and Emma Matthews, the film chronicles the history of Earth since the dawn of film through material selected from over 600 episodes of the series, featuring cultural legends such as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Andy Warhol and Nelson Mandela.

In total, encompassing features and shorts, the programme will showcase 7 world premieres and 55 UK premieres.

The festival are partnering with The Light Cinema, Cambridge’s new multiplex, which will host a large portion of the programme.

This year marks festival director Tony Jones’ 30th anniversary at the helm.
