Charlize Theron has taken remake rights to Dutch psychological thriller Two Eyes Staring (Zwart Water) by Dutch writer/director Elbert van Strien.

The remake will be made through Theron’s company Denver & Delila, with Theron expected to appear in the film. Denver & Delilah producers are reportedly meeting top directors to head the project.

The Dutch original, about a nine-year-old girl who discovers that her sinister new friend is the ghost of her mother’s dead twin sister, is written and directed by Elbert van Strien. Paulo van Vliet co-wrote and Claudia Brandt and van Strien produced for Accento Films.

The thriller had its Dutch premiere in March 2010 and screened at various international festivals, including Edinburgh and Puchon. It has been sold to South Korea (KT&G) and France (Zylo) so far, with producers currently negotiating deals for Germany and Mexico.

“She [Theron] watched the film and was very enthusiastic about it,” commented producer Claudia Brandt. “She has quite a connection with the material.”
