Ten films will be awarded production funding by the Global Film Initiative during the summer 2011 granting cycle, with each filmmaker set to receive $10,000.
“The diversity of talent we’re seeing is wonderful,” board chair of the global film initiative Susan Weeks Coulter said. “Ten years ago, we hoped for this kind of creative growth in the industry and ten years later, in the middle of a global recession, it’s here.”
The grantees for this cycle include Mexican director Ernesto Contrera with I Dream In Another Language, first-time director Bety Reis with a portrait of life in contemporary East Timor Beatriz’s War and Donald Mugisha with an Ugandan adaptation of 1940s neo-realist cinema classic The Boda Boda Thieves.
Since the programme began in 2002 more than 100 grants have been awarded to filmmakers from Africa, Asia, central and Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
