Christie Duo chosen for James Cameron’s Titanic 3D premiere

Christie Digital and Cameron’s Lightstorm signed five-year deal in September 2011.

The world premiere of James Cameron’s 3D release of Titanic at London’s Royal Albert Hall on March 27 utilised the Christie Duo dual-projector solution to provide the brightest possible images.

Christie Digital and Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment have worked in collaboration since an announcement in September 2011, when the two companies signed a five-year agreement to exchange research, development and technical support on HFR (High Frame Rate) projection, seen by Cameron as the future of cinema projection.

“It truly is an honour for Christie to be working alongside James Cameron on such a prestigious world premiere,” said Dale Miller, vice president of Christie EMEA. “With more than 80 years of history in cinema, Christie continues to push the boundaries with major digital innovations, including 3D deployment.”

The Christie Duo is a dual projection integration kit, designed to allow exhibitors to exhibit the brightest possible 2K or 4K cinema in 2D or 3D on the largest screens. Duo comes with automated features that calibrate, align and optimize images from both Christie Solaria Series 2K ort 4K projectors. Exhibitors can achieve a 3D image with brightness levels up to twice as high as that achieved by current 3D projection market leaders. The Christie Duo integration kit can be purchased with the Christie Solaria Series or as a standalone kit for Christie customers who already have Christie projectors installed.

“I’m pleased to have Christie continuing to accompany me on my ‘journey of discovery’,” Cameron said, “which will see studios and cinema owners providing stirring 3D and, in due course, high frame rate movies.”

Early adopters of Christie Duo include the Arclight Cinemas in the US, including Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome, and Groupo Araújo de Cinemas in Brazil.
