DeaPlaneta pick up The Awakening for Spain
Murphy’s feature directorial debut is set in post-World War I England in 1921, and follows a skeptical woman who travels to a countryside boarding school to investigate rumours of a haunting presence.
The cast is led by Rebecca Hall, Dominic West and Imelda Staunton. David Thompson is producing through his outfit Origin Pictures, alongside Julia Stannard and Sarah Curtis. BBC Films’ Joe Oppenheimer is executive producing, alongside Will Clarke and Jenny Borgars of StudioCanal’s UK distribution and production arm Optimum Releasing.
This deal follows the announcement of DeaPlaneta’s other pick-up of Tomas Alfredson’s spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, starring Colin Firth and Gary Oldman, also from Studio Canal.
In further news from Berlin, Wanda Vision has picked up Spanish theatrical rights to Julie Gavras’ Berlinale Special title Late Bloomers, starring William Hurt and Isabella Rossellini, from Gaumont.
This follows a spate of other deals for the romantic comedy, including Olive Films for North America and Movienet for Germany.
