Raymond Murray’s young distributor will release the drama by Bengali filmmaker Q (aka Kaushik Mukherjee) on VoD and DVD on Dec 11.

Murray, the co-founder of TLA Entertainment Group, described Gandu as a “music-infused look at one poor young man and his dreams of becoming a rap star.”

The film, whose title translates into ‘Asshole’ in English, presents a dystopian view of teenage angst in Kolkata. It was banned in India in 2011 but eventually screened on the sub-continent.

“When I started the label, I wasn’t sure exactly what kinds of titles I’d try to acquire,” Murray said. “Then I saw Gandu. I left the theater thinking this is exactly the kind of film Artsploitation should champion: edgy, strange, exciting, sexy and controversial. It’s international, it’s drama, it’s an art film, it’s a hyperventilating genre film.”
