Fabrication Films has sold Christian Johnson’s fact-based space station disaster film Almaz Black Box to Presidio in Japan following the premiere screening on the first day of the market.

The film centres on events in 1998 when a Russian military space station carrying three crew members and two Western observers crashed to earth after a glitch severed the communications system.

Footage reveals what happened on the vessel through the Black Box feeds discovered by counter-intelligence group RIOT. Fabrication Films will handle the US theatrical release.

‘The tension that builds in this film as the cosmonauts realise there is no way they can save themselves is incredible,’ Fabrication chief executive officer Kjehl Rasmussen said. ‘We are excited to be working with one of film’s newest and most provocative directors.’

‘I am thrilled to have Presidio buy this film,’ executive vice president Wendy Reeds said. ‘They have been aggressively following the film, doing research on the internet concerning the Almaz Space Programme, and getting as much information as possible before the market.’

Fabrication’s recent theatrical releases include Conversations With Other Women, La Tropical, and The Last Dispatch.
