The late torrent of Toronto deal continued heading into the weekend as ATO Pictures said on Friday (16) it had picked up North America rights to The Oranges while WWE Studios acquired US rights to The Day.
Meanwhile Friends With Kids was expected to finally close following over a week of courtship with several buyers. Domestic sales agent John Sloss intimated in a tweet on Saturday that a deal was imminent. Other titles in play include Hysteria and You’re Next.
ATO Pictures said it had scheduled an “aggressive” platform theatrical release for 2012 followed by ancillary roll-out.
Head of acquisitions Sarah Lash brokered the deal with CAA on behalf of Olympus Pictures – which enjoyed a successful Toronto 2010 with sales for Beginners and Rabbit Hole – as well as Likely Story and co-writer and executive producer Jay Reiss.
Hugh Laurie, Catherine Keener, Allison Janney, Oliver Platt, Alia Shawkat, Adam Brody and Leighton Meester star in the dark comedy about dysfunctional neighbours.
WWE Studios president Michael Luisi and vp of business and legal affairs Bradley Buchanan brokered the deal for The Day with Kevin Iwashina of Preferred Content on behalf of the filmmakers.
Doug Aarniokoski’s action thriller follows a group of people as they fight to survive in a post-apocalyptic environment. Shawn Ashmore, Ashley Bell, Dominic Monaghan and Shannyn Sossamon are among the cast.
WWE Studios plans to use its television, digital and social media and print assets to exploit the title.
