Among Competition titles, Madman gets Kid, Source, Melancholia; Transmittion takes on Kevin and Pope.

The ink is now dry on the major Australian rights deals done at Cannes and Madman has secured three of the competition titles being Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne’s The Kid With A Bike, Radu Mihaileanu’s The Source and Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia.

The Cannes competition carve up also saw Transmission pick up Nanni Moretti’s We Have A Pope and Hopscotch score Lynne Ramsay’s We Need To Talk About Kevin. Hopscotch also bought two Un Certain Regard titles: Nadine Labaki’s Where Do We Go Now and Robert Guediguian’s The Snows Of Kilimanjaro. A third, homegrown director Ivan Sen’s Toomelah, will be released by Curious.

Madman was one the most active buyers and its other acquisitions included How I Live Now from director Kevin Macdonald (The Last King Of Scotland), and The Five Obstructions: Scorsese Vs Trier, a collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Von Trier.

Palace secured 14 films, six of which were French titles, including Something In The Air from Olivier Assayas, Goodbye, First Love from Mia Hansen-Love and All Our Desires from Philippe Lioret. Palace released the previous films of all three of these directors — respectively Summer Hours, Father Of My Children and Welcome — grossing a total of about $2.5m in Australia. The other French titles were Elles, The Look and Paris-Manhattan.

Hopscotch also bought up big, picking up Words And Pictures from Australian director Fred Schepisi, Parker, Seven Psychopaths from In Bruges writer/director Martin McDonagh, Mavericks from LA Confidential director Curtis Hanson, The Hypnotist from Chocolat director Lasse Hallström and Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris, which was the opening night film at Cannes.

Hoyts, which has had tremendous success with the Twilight franchise, acquired The Host, which is adapted from the 2008 science fiction novel of the same name written by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer.

Australia dealt with about 40 sales agents in this year’s Cannes buying spree.
