Giselle cinema launch coming later this month in territories including UK, Russia, Australia.

Ballet will make its 3D film debut when the Mariinsky Theatre’s production of Giselle arrives in cinemas later this month, via distributor More2Screen.

The film will begin screening on March 25 in cinemas in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Spain, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Brazil.  

Giselle, the story of a girl who dies and watches over her lover as a ghost, is a collaboration between More2Screen and 3D production company CAN Communicate.

“We are thrilled to be working with CAN Communicate and the internationally acclaimed Mariinsky Theatre in bringing this stunning production to cinemas worldwide,” said More2Screen managing director Christine Costello in a statement.  “We believe Giselle in 3D will appeal to both the established ballet fan and those wanting to see something a little different at the cinema.”

Giselle follows the live 3D screening of Donizetti’s opera Lucrezia Borgia in February, which was also distributed by More2Screen.  

Valery Gergiev, artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre, called 3D “the future technology for all theatrical productions” and added, “This will be a progressive move to ensure that the future of ballet and opera is never questioned.”
