EXCLUSIVE, UPDATED JULY 7: The distributor is understood to have picked up US rights to Anurag Kashyap’s gangster epic.

Gangs Of Wasseypur is a gangster saga set in the heartland of India’s coal industry – the city of Dhanbad in the state of Jharkand – where the local coal mine mafia rules with an iron fist.

The $5m Hindi-language story charts the life of a family locked in a blood feud with a local union leader-turned-mafia boss from the 1940s to the present day.

Adi Shankar of 1984 Private Defense Contractors will present the two-part release.

Kashyap co-wrote the screenplay with Syed Zeeshan Qadri, Akhilesh Jaiswal and Sachin Ladia

Kashyap produced with Sunil Bohra, Guneet Monga and financier Viacom 18 Motion Pictures

Mumbai-based Kashyap’s credits include That Girl In Yellow Boots and Dev D.

Sources in the production and financing community alerted Screendaily to the deal, however Cinelicious Pics had not confirmed the deal at time of writing.

The distributor launched in June under the aegis of Los Angeles-based post house and restoration experts Cinelicious.

The first recently announced films on the roster of 12 anticipated films a year were Giuseppe Makes A Movie, Metalhead and Elektro Moska.
