Drafthouse Films has acquired UK genre specialist Ben Wheatley’s upcoming horror film A Field In England.

The film, Wheatley’s fourth after Down Terrace, Kill List and Sightseers, is described as “a psychedelic trip into magic and madness”.

A Field In England takes place during the English Civil War in the 17th century and follows a group of soldiers who are captured by an alchemist and led into a massive mushroom field. Reece Shearsmith and Michael Smiley star.

Drafthouse plans a theatrical and VoD release later this year. Film4, Picturehouse Entertainment, 4DVD, Film4 Channel and the BFI Distribution Fund are partnering on the day-and-date UK release on Jul 5 encompassing theatrical, DVD, VoD and free TV.

Wheatley and producers Claire Jones and Andy Starke put the film together with financing through Film4’s talent and ideas arm Film4.0 headed by Anna Higgs.

The filmmaker is also in pre-production on his “eight-figure” sci-fi epic Freak Shift.
