eOne reports Cannes spree

Entertainment One (eOne) has reported acquiring more than 50 films — including multi-territory buys Pompeii, Parker and The Big Wedding - at what filmed entertainment president Patrice Theroux said was “the best Cannes we’ve ever had.”

Toronto-based eOne, which operates in the UK, the US, Canada, Benelux, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Scandinavia and South Africa, picked up Paul WS Anderson’s Pompeii from Summit Entertainment for the UK, Canada and Benelux.

Taylor Hackford’s Parker, with Jason Statham starring, was picked up from Sierra Films/Affinity for the UK, Canada, Australia and Benelux.

The Big Wedding, starring Katherine Heigl, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton and Amanda Seyfried, was bought from Nu Image for Canada and Benelux.

eOne took on HanWay Films 7 Psychopaths, with Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Christopher Walken, for Australia and Benelux and Wild Bunch’s Angel’s Share, directed by Ken Loach, for the UK and Canada.

In single-territory deals, the company acquired Summit’s Tarzan 3D and Wild Bunch’s Lay the Favorite for the UK and GK Films’ Rum Diary and London Boulevard, QED’s I, Alex Cross, Wild Bunch’s Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia and Inferno’s The Host for Canada.

For Australia, eOne bought Lakeshore Entertainment’s Mavericks and Gone, Imagina’s Midnight in Paris, Independent’s We Need to Talk about Kevin and Svensk’s The Hypnotist.

Deals were signed for Benelux on IM Global’s Last Days of American Crime, Sierra Pictures’ Ender’s Game and Lionsgate’s Great Hope Springs.

For North America, eOne acquired Devil’s Rock from NZ Film and TV series Arn from Svensk.

In video rights deals the company picked up SC Films’ Retreat for France and Scandinavia and Foresight’s Universal Soldier 4 for France.

“We are thrilled with the quality of the films acquired for all of our territories at this year’s Festival de Cannes,” Theroux said. “As we continue to expand our operations into new countries and territories, we find more opportunities to acquire film and television programs on a multi-territory basis, which in turn allows us to be a more significant partner to both producers and sales agents. The recent addition of Hopscotch to the eOne team also generated a lot of excitement for the whole Entertainment One group.”
