Sony Pictures Classics has finalised a pre-Cannes acquisition of Michael Haneke’s competition entry The White Ribbon and bought Jan Kounen’s closing night film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

The distributor took all North American rights to The White Ribbon from Les Films Du Losange ahead of its world premiere on Thursday [21] and the US and English Canadia from Wild Bunch to Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky, which will close the festival on May 24.

This will be the second time Sony Pictures Classics has collaborated with Haneke since it released Cache in 2005. The White Ribbon takes place prior to the start of the first world war where the quiet life of a small German village is mysteriously eroded by a series of inexplicable events.

X-Filme Creative Pool in Germany, Les Films Du Losange in France, Wega Film in Austria and Lucky Red in Italy collaborated. Margaret Menegoz, Stefan Arndt, Veit Heiduschka and Michael Katz produced. In a statement Sony Pictures Classics called The White Ribbon Haneke’s “masterwork.”

Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky is set in 1920s Paris and charts a passionate affair between the fashion icon and Russian émigré. The film is based on Chris Greenhalgh’s book Coco And Igor and stars Chanel model Anna Mouglalis alongside Mads Mikkelsen.

Claudie Ossard produced and previously worked with Sony Pictures Classics on The City Of Lost Children in 1995. Chris Bolzli also produced.
