German cinemas have reported that box office takings climbed 18% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2010 thanks to such 3D releases as Avatar and Alice In Wonderland.
Figures collated by Rentrak EDI for the period from December 31 2009 to March 28 2010 show that box office revenues were €268.4m, compared to €229.8m for the same period in 2009.
While the James Cameron blockbuster has been seen by more than 10.4m cinema-goers and taken more than €105m since its release on December 17, Alice In Wonderland (pictured) is 2010’s most successful release to date with €20m in grosses and more than 2.1m admissions, followed by Sherlock Holmes (€12.1m) through Warner Bros Pictures International and Sony’s local production Friendship! (€10.2m).
Twentieth Century Fox had the largest market share in the first three months with 34%, while Herbert Kloiber’s Concorde Film was the leading German independent sector with 6%, according to box office takings.
Meanwhile, Constantin Film Verleih took pole position among the independents based on admissions with a market share of 6.8% thanks to such releases as the family films Hier Kommt Lola and The Crocodiles 2 (Vorstadtkrokodile 2), Doris Dorrie’s The Hairdresser (Die Friseuse), and the detective comedy Jerry Cotton.
