Toy Story 3 is expected to cross $400m this weekend but will face a strong challenge from Inception for the overseas box office crown.
Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International’s Pixar release currently stands at $376.1m and ventures into German-speaking Europe and Portugal this weekend.
Inception has already amassed $113.3m through Warner Bros Pictures International from its first two weeks in action and unravels its mysteries in Germany, which could prove to be the decisive battleground in determining who reigns supreme this weekend.
WDSMPI’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice on $29.5m opens in a further eight markets including Mexico, Taiwan and Scandinavia.
Fox International’s action comedy Knight And Day should cross $100m this weekend when it touches down in eight territories. The Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz match-up has reached $90.7m and opens in France and Belgium, among others. The A-Team on $60.9m arrives in the UK and Spain, while Predators has grossed $49m.
DreamWorks Animation’s Shrek Forever After stands at $382.1m through PPI and should also cross $400m this weekend thanks to continued holdover business. The Last Airbender on $31.2m opens in France and Belgium.
Universal/UPI’s Despicable Me on $18.6m arrives in 11 including Mexico and Argentina. The Timur Bekmambetov-produced Russia hit Black Lightning opens in France on July 28.
Summit International’s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse has reached $335m. Latest figures put the film on $39.1m in the UK, $26m in Russia, $25.7m in Brazil, $25.2m in Australia, $22.3m in Spain, $21.1m in Germany, $19.6m in Mexico, and $11.7m in South Korea.
Sony Pictures Releasing International’s spy thriller Salt arrives in 12 new territories this weekend including Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Russia. The Karate Kid opens in the UK and Grown Ups arrives in Spain.
