IFC Films has acquired US rights to Daniel Monzon’s Spanish prison drama Cell 211 (Celda 211) ahead of its New York premiere on December 4 as the opening night film of the Film Society Of Lincoln Center’s Spanish Cinema Now series.

IFC Films will release in 2010 via its Festival Direct movies-on-demand platform after IFC Films’ director of acquisitions Lizzie Nastro brokered the deal with Films Distribution CEO Nicolas Brigaud Robert.

Luis Tosar, Alberto Ammann, Antonio Resines, Marta Etura and Carlos Bardem star in the story of a novice prison guard who must pretend he is a prisoner after he is stranded during a riot.

Cell 211 has grossed more than $7.9m internationally so far. Monzon’s credits include Heart Of The Warrior, The Biggest Robbery Never Told, and The Kovak Box.
