Pathe scores Philomena, Mandela deals

Other hot sellers include Cannes Competition hit The Great Beauty by Paolo Sorrentino.

Pathe International has announced a huge crop of Cannes deals, led by Stephen Frears’ Philomena, starring Judi Dench.

After showing six minutes of footage, Pathe closed deals in US, Canada and Spain (The Weinstein Company), Australia (Hopscotch), Italy (Lucky Red), Germany (Square One),  Latin America (IDC), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Japan (Phantom Films),  Portugal (Lusomundo), Greece (Feel Good), Czech Republic (AQS), Middle East (Shooting Star), Hong Kong (Golden Harvest), Israel (Shani), Taiwan (Atom) and Iceland (Myndform). The film will launch in the autumn.

Pathe also reported busy business on Justin Chadwick’s Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom starring Idris Elba.

It has now sold to North America (The Weinstein Company), Germany (Senator), Australia (Village Roadshow), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Benelux (Paradiso), Brazil (Vinny Films), Hong Kong (Golden Scene), Israel (Shani), Middle East (Gulf Films) and Singapore (Shaw).  

The new Dany Boon comedy Superchondriac, to star Kad Merad, has sold to Germany (Prokino), CIS (Volga), the Middle East (Gulf Films), the Netherlands (Paradiso), Portugal (Vandetta) and Turkey (Chantier).

Of its finished films, Paolo Sorrentino’s Cannes Competition hit The Great Beauty (La Grande Bellezza) sold to Germany (DCM), the UK (Artificial Eye), Australia (Palace), Japan (Respect), Benelux (Cinemien), Portugal (Lusomundo), Greece (Feel good movies), the Czech Republic & Slovakia (Film Europe),  Brazil (Mares Filmes), Canada (Mongrel), and Israel (United King).

Alejandro Jodorowsky’s La Danza De La Realidad, which screening in Directors’ Fortnight, sold to Uplink for Japan.

Cannes Closing Night selection Zulu directed by Jerome Salle, has sold to the US (The Weinstein Company), Japan (Klockworx), Brazil (Europa), Scandinavia (Scanbox), Latin America (Telexcine), India (Pictureworks), Ex-yugoslavia (MCF) and Iceland (Myndform).  

French box-office hit The Gilded Cage (La Cage Doree) sold to Germany (Prokino), Italy (Made In Italy), Australia (Palace), Brazil (Mares), Canada (AZ), and Hungary (Vertigo).
