The Regal Entertainment Group announced on Friday [5] that the online demand-driven documentary Girl Rising will make encore showings in Regal and Regal-owned United Artists and Edwards Theatres sites across the US from Apr 19-25.

The film, produced by girls’ empowerment campaign 10x10, focuses on nine girls from nine countries striving to push their own limits in using education as a tool to change the world.

Girl Rising came to public attention through its crowdsourcing approach, in which respondents successfully utilised online resource and distributor Gathr to commit to buy at least 100 tickets per screening, securing theatrical placement.

“We’ve eradicated the risk of (opening a movie in theatres),” said Gathr CEO Scott Glosserman. “We have presented to the people a way for them to demonstrate their demand. That alone has changed theatrical distribution overnight. It has totally flipped. We’ve basically democratised theatrical distribution… that’s the way we look at it.”

“Regal recognises the intense interest by American moviegoers demanding that this film be seen in their local communities,” added Regal CEO Amy Miles.

Over the Mar 7 opening weekend Girl Rising grossed an estimated $250,000 and has gone on to earn approximately $730,000 from 73,824 ticket sales.

Girl Rising features narration from Cate Blanchett, Priyanka Chopra, Selena Gomez, Anne Hathaway, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Chloë Moretz, Liam Neeson, Freida Pinto, Meryl Streep and Kerry Washington.

“We have been overwhelmed by the incredible response to Girl Rising,” said director Richard E Robbins. “Around the country, thousands of people have brought Girl Rising to their local theatres with on-demand screenings.

“Now, Regal Cinemas is making this film – and the stories of these nine incredible girls – available to anyone who wants to see it. The more people who witness the impact of education on girls’ lives, the closer we get to driving change and getting girls into school.”
