Sony Pictures Releasing International will cross $2bn at the overseas box office this weekend, powering Sony towards its best worldwide haul.

Internationally through Wednesday [December 2] the tally stood at $1.987bn. Globally through Wednesday Sony Pictures Entertainment releases had amassed $3.357bn, surpassing the studio’s previous best of $3.334bn.

2009 marks the fifth time that a studio will have crossed the $2bn threshold internationally, following Paramount in 2008, Warner Bros in 2007 and 2004, and 20th Century Fox in 2006.

Driving the result is 2012, which is projected to cross $500m internationally this weekend and stands at $620m worldwide. Other key drivers include Angels & Demons on $352.6m overseas, Terminator Salvation on $220.6m, This Is It on $180m, The Ugly Truth on $114.2m, District 9 on $69.4m, The Taking Of Pelham 123 on $86.4m, and Seven Pounds, which grossed $99.3m in 2009 alone.

“Even in the midst of an economy that continues to challenge our industry, this has been a tremendous year in just about every way we can imagine,” chairman of Sony Pictures worldwide marketing and distribution Jeff Blake said.
