The Weinstein Company (TWC) has picked up Madonna’s drama, one of two acquisitions it made in the dying days of Cannes along with a competition title that is expected to be announced this week.

TWC executives indicated a 2011 release date for W.E., which may get an awards push and join a slate of hopefuls that includes My Week With Marilyn,The Iron Lady, Coriolanus and possibly The Wettest County.

Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, James D’Arcy, Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Dormer, Richard Coyle, James Fox and Laurence Fox star in W.E., a drama about a lonely contemporary New Yorker who investigates the historic romance between King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson.

Madonna [pictured here presenting the film to buyers in Berlin earlier this year in an event staged by sales agent IM Global] co-wrote with Alek Keshishian and produced alongside Kris Thykier. Scott Franklin served as executive producer. The TWC acquisitions team brokered the deal with CAA for the filmmakers.
