Dogwoof has acquired UK theatrical rights to The Overnighters.

Jesse Moss’ documentary receives its UK premiere at Sheffield Doc/Fest and won the Documentary Special Jury award for Intuitive Filmmaking at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The deal was brokered between Oli Harbottle, head of distribution for Dogwoof, and Jason Ishikawa at The Film Sales Company.

Harbottle commented: “The Overnighters is one of the stand-out docs of the year and the team at Dogwoof could not be more thrilled about introducing it to UK audiences. We’re confident that it will prove a must-see film through robust critical response and strong word-of-mouth.”

The Overnighters follows Pastor Jay Reinke of the Concordia Lutheran Church who has transformed the church and its parking lot into shelters for down on their luck men to bed down, have a meal and receive much needed support.

When the local paper discovers that registered sex offenders are amongst the men, Pastor Reinke faces a battle with neighbours, city councillors and his congregation to keep his shelter open.

The film will be released in UK in late 2014.
