Exotic Pictures to explore history between the Dutch and Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal.

Dutch production company Lemming Film, which co-produced Amat Escalante’s Cannes entry Heli, is working alongside Indonesian filmmaker Edwin and his production company Babibutafilm on new film Exotic Pictures (working title)

According to the producers, the feature will “explore the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal”.

Lorna Tee, who co-produced Edwin’s most recent feature Postcards from the Zoo, is also a producer of the project. With “Postcards” in 2012, Edwin became the first Indonesian filmmaker in competition at the Berlinale.

Exotic Pictures is written by Edwin and writer/director Marco van Geffen and is set between 1940 until late ‘50s. The story takes place in Bali and will be shot entirely on location in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

The project will be presented at the Netherlands Production Platform this September and in October at the Asian Project Market (Busan International Film Festival).

Pallas Films’ Karl Baungartner and Thanassis Karathanos, are already attached as the German partner.
