The European Film Academy has announced the three nominations in the European Documentary 2013 category.
A committee consisting of EFA Board Member Antonio Saura, producer (Spain), EFA Member Despina Mouzaki, producer (Greece), as well as documentary experts Claas Danielsen (Germany), Ally Derks (Netherlands) and Jacques Laurent (Belgium) decided on the nominations.
They include Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing, which has won awards at Berlin, CPH:DOX and Sheffield Doc/Fest among others. In the film, former Indonesian death squad leaders reenact their real-life mass-killings in whichever cinematic genres they wish.
The second nominee is Stop-Over (L’escale), the Swiss-French co-pro directed by Kaveh Bakhtiari, which explores the lives of a group of Iranian illegals in Athens. The film played in Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes.
The final nominee is The Missing Picture (L’image manquante), in which director Rithy Panh uses clay figures, archival footage, and his narration to recreate the atrocities Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge committed between 1975 and 1979. It won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes.
The nominated films will now be submitted to the 2,900 EFA Members to elect the winner.
The European Documentary 2013 will be presented at the 26th European Film Awards Ceremony in Berlin on Dec 7.
