Latvian capital Riga is to host the 27th European Film Awards in 2014.

The city, named the European Capital of Culture for 2014, will host the awards ceremony at the Latvian National Opera on Dec 13, 2014.

It will be the second time the EFAs have been held in the Baltics, after being hosted in Tallinn, Estonia in 2010.

The awards alternates between Berlin and another European city each year. Last year, the EFAs celebrated its 25th anniverary in Malta. It will return to Germany this year.

EFA director Marion Döring said: “As a truly European event, this is the only awards ceremony that travels and it is always great to bring the awards elsewhere.

“We’re looking forward to the Latvian taste the awards weekend will doubtlessly acquire.”

The European Film Awards are presented by the European Film Academy and EFA Productions.

The 2014 event will be organized by Foundation Riga 2013 with financial backing from the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia and the Riga City Council, as well as German Federal Film Board, the German State Lottery Berlin, the German State Minister for Culture and the Media, the EU’s MEDIA program, the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and event sponsor, parcel delivery company GLS.
