The External World by Berlin-based director David O’ Reilly won Best Animation. His previous Please Say Something had won Best Short Film at the 2008 Berlinale. The Diploma of Merit in the animation competition went to Canada’s Theodore Ushev for Lipsett Diaries.

The Tampere Short Film Nominee for the European Film Awards is the 30-minute fiction Silent River, a German-Romanian co-production directed by Anca Miruna Lazarescu.

In the National Competition, Jan Andersson’s animation The Illustrated City won the Main Prize in the under 30 minutes category, and another animation, Elli Vuorinen’s The Tongueling, received the Special Prize, and the Prize of the Youth Jury. The Diploma of Merit was awarded to Erkki Maattanen’s documentary Rubens Of Siurua.

In the over 30 minutes category, the Main Prize went to Juho Kuosmanen’s fiction The Painting Sellers, and the Special Prize was awarded to Beauty Sleep, a fiction by Elias Koskimies. Iiris Harma’s documentary Look At Me received the Diploma of Merit. 

The Risto Jarva Jury awarded Jan Ijas’s experimental Sweet Mov(i)e.

The 41st edition of Tampere Film Festival proved its popularity with audiences, with 29,000 tickets sold, and 20 sold-out screenings, among which the shorts from the National Competition attracted most attention. Among side programmes, screenings of Yoni Leyser’s documentary William S. Burroughs: A Man Within, Canon of Short Film: Modern Animation, Jonas Odell’s retrospective, and Jean Epstein’s 1928 The Fall Of The House Of Usher with live music accompaniment were sold out.
