Kris Thykier’s UK-based PeaPie Films is partnering with Meta Foldager’s Meta Films to produce Denmark ‘92, about Denmark’s unlikely victory at the 1992 UEFA European Football Championship.
Anders August, whose credits include Applause, Superclasico and A Funny Man, will write for director Kasper Barfoed (The Numbers Station).
The Danish team only qualified for the championship because of the breakup of Yugoslavia, and yet the underdogs went on to win the title against all odds.
Kris Thykier said: “Anders and Kasper are at the very top of their game and together we feel we have the right team to bring this unbelievable story to the big screen for the first time. We believe that this story has enormous potential not just in Scandinavia but around the world and look forward to a truly Danish collaboration with international commercial appeal.”
Foldager added: “This is not a film merely about football but about redemption, pride, friendship, determination and triumph against all the odds.”
Barfoed [pictured] said: “I am delighted to be working on this project. I was at the final game of the 1992 Championship with my father and the team and its story will always have a special place in my heart.”
Thykier is a former partner in Matthew Vaughn’s MARV Films and he recently produced Madonna’s W.E.; he is in post now with Dan Mazer’s Working Title romcom I Give It A Year. Zentropa veteran Foldager is a long-time collaborator with Lars von Trier and also produced this year’s Berlinale hit A Royal Affair.
