The $60m epic will likely shoot in the next two years.
Working Title Films has optioned the screenplay for Baltasar Kormakur’s long-planned epic Vikingr, based on the Icelandic Sagas. WT is developing with a view to produce.
Kormakur’s passion project, which will shoot in the English language, is set to be the largest film production in the country’s history, with a budget estimated at about $60m.
Kormakur devised the story and co-wrote the screenplay with Olafor Egilsson, who also worked on White Night Wedding.
Kormakur’s own production outfit Blueeyes is also on board and Kormakur would co-produce in addition to directing.
He hopes to make the film in the next two years.
The director has been working recently with Working Title/Universal on Mark Wahlberg-starring Contraband, a remake of Reykjavik-Rotterdam [which Kormakur starred in and produced].
Meanwhile, Kormakur has The Deep (Djupid) in post production. That survival story, starring Olafur Darri Olafsson, is based on the true tale of a young fisherman who swam for five hours in icy waters after his comrades perished at sea.
Kormakur’s past films include 101 Reykjavik, Jar City and A Little Trip To Heaven.
