The Global Film Initiative has chosen seven film-makers from a pool of 66 candidates from 33 countries to receive production funding during the winter 2009 granting cycle.

Since its inception in 2002, the initiative has awarded more than 70 grants to projects from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East. Funds are used to subsidise post-production costs.

The seven film-makers and their projects are:

  • Wanjiru Kinyanjui (Kenya) – The Captain Of Nakara
  • Nadine Khan (Egypt) – Chaos, Disorder (Harag W’marag)
  • Zhang Lu (China) – Dooman River
  • Caroline Kamya (Uganda) – Imani
  • Chris Chong Chan Fui (Malaysia) – Karaoke
  • Yvette Paz Soldan (Bolivia) – The Song Of The Wind (La Tonada Del Viento)
  • Fabrizio Aguilar Boschetti (Peru) – Tarata.

“We are particularly pleased to receive such strong projects from Africa, especially after recently attending FESPACO in Burkina Faso, and meeting so many talented film-makers,” the Initiative’s board chair Susan Weeks Coulter said.
