Game Of Thrones broke a record set by Frasier 12 years ago to scoop the highest number of Emmys won by a fictional series.
The HBO fantasy drama was nominated for 24 awards and picked up 12, beating House Of Cards, Downton Abbey and Homeland to outstanding drama series for the second year running.
The night brought its total haul to 38, beating Frasier’s Emmys record of 37.
It was a strong night for HBO across the board with comedy Veep winning outstanding comedy series and Julia Louis-Dreyfus picking up best lead actress.
Elsewhere, Danish director Susanne Bier picked up a directing award for the BBC’s adaption of John Le Carre’s spy novel The Night Manager.
Meanwhile John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight beat James Corden’s The Late Late Show to pick up best variety talk series.
Elsewhere Ryan Murphy’s dramatisation of the OJ Simpson trial The People v O.J Simpson did well, converting 22 nominations into five wins in the mini-series categories.
The Voice beat Dancing With The Stars and Project Runway to take home outstanding reality competition series.
British winners included Dame Maggie Smith, who won outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Downton Abbey for the third time, and failed to turn up to the ceremony for the ninth.
BBC1’s Sherlock picked up best TV movie for its special episode The Abominable Bride.
