EXCLUSIVE: New films by David Cronenberg, Quentin Dupieux and Lone Scherfig are among the titles acquired by German distributors at this year’s AFM.
Christian Meinke’s MFA+ has picked up David Cronenberg’s Maps To The Stars, starring Robert Pattinson, Julianne Moore and John Cusack, and Tobias Lindholm’s thriller A Hijacking (Kapringen), about a Danish cargo ship hijacked by Somali pirates.
MFA+ has also picked up producer/actor Vincent Grashaw’s feature debut Coldwater, which premiered at this year’s SXSW festival and won the audience award for best feature at Prague’s Fresh Film Festival.
Munich-based Tiberius Film came back from Santa Monica with another three titles in its luggage along with the films it had picked up at the beginning of the market.
New pick-ups included cult director Quentin Dupieux’s latest feature Wrong Cops, starring shock rocker Marylin Manson, Twin Peaks’ Grace Zabriskie alongside Steve Little, Eric Judor and Mark Burnham from Dupieux’s Wrong.
Other acquisitions were action thriller Kite, inspired by an anime and starring Samuel L. Jackson; and French comedy It Happened In St. Tropez (Des Gens Qui S’Embrassent), with Monica Bellucci, Kad Merad and Eric Elmosnino.
Tiberius’ first acquisitions at the AFM had been Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut How To Catch A Monster and Ariel Zeitoun’s lavish costume drama adaptation of the internationally bestselling novel Angelique by Anne and Serge Golon.
In addition, Prokino snagged the rights for Ned Benson’s feature debut The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, starring James McAvoy and Jessica Chastain, and Lone Scherfig’s Posh, with Douglas Booth, Max Irons and Sam Claflin.
