South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) has announced award-winning Kazakhstani film-maker Darezhan Omirbayev will head its International Competition jury this year.
Korean director Ryoo Seung-wan, Indian director Santosh Sivan, US academic Don Fredericksen and Korean actor Jung Woo-sung will join him.
Omirbayev, whose Student was in last year’s Cannes Un Certain Regard section, has a history with JIFF. He participated in the Jeonju Digital Project 2006 shorts omnibus along with Eric Khoo and Penek Ratanaruang.
Ryoo Seung-wan, whose spy thriller The Berlin File is at the moment clocking up nearly 6 million admissions at the local box office, is a regular at Jeonju. His debut film Die Bad screened at the fest’s inaugural edition.
The 2004 human rights omnibus If You Were Me, which he participated in, as well as his colonial-era action feature Dachimawa Lee and crime thriller The Unjust also screened at JIFF.
Santosh Sivan’s award-winning credits include directing drama The Terrorist and period piece Before The Rains. He was also cinematographer on several Bollywood films such as Bride & Prejudice, starring Aishwarya Rai, and Asoka, starring Shah Rukh Khan.
Don Fredericksen is a professor of film at Cornell University’s Department of Performing and Media Arts. His publications include Bergman’s Persona and the essay The Condition of Being ‘In Between’ in Anthropology, Jungian Depth Psychology, and Film.
Pan-Asian star Jung Woo-sung’s films include Reign Of Assassins, co-directed by John Woo and Su Chao-Pin, and Kim Jee-woon’s The Good, The Bad, The Weird. He was also on the New Currents jury at the Busan International Film Festival last year.
The 14th JIFF will run April 25 to May 3, 2013.
