New York-based independent producer Paul Mezey of Journeyman Pictures has revealed further details of his work with Cinereach - the non-profit organisation with which he worked on the Oscar-nominated Beasts Of The Southern Wild.
Mezey is currently a producer-in-residence at Cinereach.
“The focus of my work right now is to make films in conjunction with Cinereach - to develop and find projects that Cinereach can fully finance and produce. Since we’re not accountable for creating high returns for an outside investor, we have a lot more flexibility in terms of what we choose to do,” he said.
“My big focus is to find new narrative films we can make.”
Here in Berlin, Mezey (whose credits include Maria Full Of Grace and Half Nelson) has been presenting Tom Gilroy’s The Cold Lands (a world premiere in Generation 14plus).
He is also readying two feature documentaries for Cinereach.
Charge by Mike Plunkett deals with the new ‘gold rush’ to mine lithium in Bolivia.
Teenage by Matt Wolf, adapted from the book by pop-culture historian Jon Savage, is billed as “an unconventional historical film about the invention of teenagers”. The film is in post-production and will be launched later this year.
Further down the line, Mezey aims to develop fictional features through Cinereach made with the same creative freedom as Beasts Of The Southern Wild.
