Fremantle inks deals for BBC One drama Capital
FremantleMedia has struck three deals for three-part drama Capital, which is produced by Kudos, part of Endemol Shine Group, for BBC One. Participant Media’s Pivot has taken US rights, Shaw has taken Canada rights, and BBC Worldwide will air the programme in Australia and New Zealand.

Toby Jones, Rachael Stirling and Gemma Jones star in the series, which Peter Bowker adapted from John Lanchester’s novel. Matt Strevens produced, executive producers were Derek Wax and Lucy Richer.

Walter Presents takes Spanish drama Locked Up for UK
Foreign-language drama SVOD brand Walter Presents, which is available in the UK exclusively on Channel 4’s All Four streaming platform, has taken rights to Globomedia’s Spanish-language women prison series Locked Up. Imagina International Sales handle worldwide rights on the title, which has performed strongly in Spain, where a second series is now airing.

Hulu takes The Book Of Negroes from eOne
Streaming platform Hulu has taken exclusive US streaming rights to The Book Of Negroes, a six-part series produced by Conquering Lion Pictures, Out of Africa Entertainment, eOne and Idlewild Films from Lawrence Hill’s novel.

Clement Virgo directed the drama, which stars Cuba Gooding Jr, Aunjanue Ellis, Louise Gossett Jr and Lyriq Bent. The deal was brokered by eOne’s head of US and Latin American sales, Joey Sabella. The series launched on US channel BET to 8.2m viewers and attracted 1.2m on CBC in Canada.

Upside acquires Roc: A Modern Times Icarus
Upside Distribution will handle international sales for Shine France on Roc: A Modern Times Icarus, a documentary directed by Olivier Megaton (Taken 2) about Hollywood conman Christophe Rocancourt. The feature is produced by Presse & Co in participation with Diego Bunuel for Canal+ and will begin shooting within a few weeks.

MIPTV hosts Roots world premiere
Roots [pictured], the remake of the classic US TV series, held its world premiere at MIPTV. Cast and crew in attendance included star of the original series LeVar Burton, as well as new cast members Anna Paquin, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Anika Noni Rose.

Netflix takes Versailles from Canal Plus
Netflix has taken second-window US streaming rights to Canal Plus’ period drama Versailles, a 10-part period drama starring Georges Blagden as Louis VIX and Alexander Vlahos as his brother. Capa Drama produced the €30m budget series, with Zodiak and Incendo. The first series garnered strong reviews in France, a second season is now in production.

BBC, Amazon move on Irish soap Red Rock
All3Media International has inked deals with the BBC and Amazon for its 40x 60-minute soap opera Red Rock. BBC1 Daytime will air the series, while Amazon Prime Video has US rights.

David Tennant joins Matter’s Fireman Sam special
David Tennant has boarded the voice cast of a 60-minute Fireman Sam special, which is being produced by HIT Entertainment under the toy company’s Mattel Creations banner. China’s Xing Xing Digital Corporation are handling animation.

Mattel signs international Bob The Builder deals
Mattel Creations has also inked deals on its new Bob The Builder TV series from HIT Entertainment, an update of the popular children’s franchise. Channel 11 has taken for Australia, NRK – Super for Norway, Dreamia-Panda for Portugal and ATV-Minika for Turkey.

Fox Networks Group Asia strikes multi-deal with Japan’s Wowow
Fox Networks Group Asia will broadcast five mini-series from Wowow’s banner Drama W on its flagship movie channel SCM. The shows included in the deal are: Stars In The Deep, Presumption Of Guilt, Singari, Cocoon Of Stone and Enka-Gold Rush.
