Call the Midwife and Penny Dreadful producer Neal Street Productions has put itself up for sale for up to $64m (£40m).

The company was established by Skyfall director Sam Mendes, Pippa Harris and Caro Newling in 2003 and is working with broker About Corporate Finance to find a suitor.

It is understood that a sale memorandum has been circulated to potential buyers in which Neal Street has heralded its status as one of the last remaining true independents of its size.

Neal Street’s other work includes Shakespeare adaptation The Hollow Crown and it is currently developing a frontier nurses drama with Call the Midwife writer Heidi Thomas.

Its film productions include movies directed by Mendes, including Revolutionary Road, Jarhead and Away We Go.

Neal Street declined to comment.
