The Walt Disney Company is to explore Star Wars spin-off films based on individual characters from the overarching property.

“We are working on a few stand-alone films,” Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger said during an interview with CNBC.

“Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga, so we will still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 over a six-year period of time starting in 2015.”

Iger did not speculate on the slate’s likely specific content and said he would leave it up to LucasFilm president Kathy Kennedy to unveil plans over time.

He added that Kasden, who wrote The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi, and Kinberg were consulting with J J Abrams on the upcoming Episode7.
